VALENTINE: HISTORY
(Content Warnings: Murder, Assault, Abuse)
During his younger years, Valentine grew up in a high-tension household with his father and mother. They had a messy, dragged-out divorce, with pre-cursors of countless verbal fights between the parents and times when Valentine's father would be absent for days on end. Before the legal split was made, his mother received several abusive phone calls and letters which had a devastating effect on her mental and emotional health. Valentine had to take care of her much of the time, and their family affairs became public knowledge.
With Valentine's own emotions about his family turning into a messy bundle, he despised talking about it. Resentment for those in his surroundings began to take a permanent hold on him, and he gradually grew more and more malicious. He bottled his hatred, never letting it show publicly. His hobby of singing began to act as an escape for him, and he looked upon it more seriously. At the same time, he began secretively hanging around with bad crowds, some of whom were involved in occult activities. Valentine expressed an interest, but never participated in group activities, in favour of pursuing it by himself.
By the time Valentine was old enough to graduate, he had fallen into the routine of putting on a friendly mask in public, and on the day he turned 18, he turned his mother in to a mental facility, only viewing her as a burden to himself. After a while, he found a musical workshop group within his hometown. After attending several lessons, he was taken aboard as part of the team for his singing ability. While working with the group, he met a girl who was hoping to be signed to a label, along with a group of other young promising musicians.
Not having any other plans for his future, this piqued his interest. During the time before the applications to the record were due, valentine slowly began to take a liking to the girl. Around this time, he adopted the name “Valentine” as his stage name. He separated from the occult-based group he had been spending time with in favour of focusing on his singing pathway, having learnt everything he needed from them anyway. Both himself and the girl he had been interested in were accepted into the record company's program for young musicians, and they both pursued their separate careers. Valentine's fondness for her began to grow into an infatuation, which in turn drove her away. Valentine, however, did not register this as an attempt to distance herself from him, and continued to place himself into situations which required direct communication between them, either unaware or dismissive of the unhealthiness of his affections.
A few months into the program, he eventually professed his affections to her verbally, and received a very blunt rejection in return. He dealt with this very poorly, and continued to force himself into her path, but began to reassociate his feelings of anger and contempt to her, doubling in potency because of her rejection. The record company soon became another hassle in his eyes. His infatuation remained, but it had since become rotten and ill-intentioned. He started to take on violent urges, and at times, would give the girl menacing looks or let threatening comments slide.
Being a girl who disliked trouble, she kept quiet about it until Valentine assaulted her. Late at night in one of the studios, Valentine confronted her when she was alone, shouting at her and pinning her against the walls of the booth while reviling and slandering her. He was booted from the program as consequence, and returned to his home town, where he began to completely re-immerse himself in occult dealings. They began to consume his life, spending every hour sorting through whatever dark materials he could get his hands on, eventually finding some that were legitimate. With this as motivation, he began to study on dark arts and magic, testing the effectiveness of what he found and practicing to become self-taught. In his complete violent mental instability, he delighted in each discovery, especially when he learnt fire and electric manipulation.
Meanwhile, finding that his father had grown wealthy, he decided to blackmail him with threats of releasing evidence of his abusive nature towards his mother (the letters). His father caves in, and sends him a fortnightly sum. Valentine had, in reality, long since destroyed the letters that his father had wrote, but remembered enough lines from them to bluff it. He had equally lost all interest in the state and dignity of his mother, and simply used the funds as a replacement for a wage; no longer seeing any value in the functions of society in light of his own recent studies and discoveries. He felt free, and powerful; unhindered and able to do whatever he desired.
He decided to move to another city as soon as he could afford it. By this point, Valentine had gone off the deep end, well and truly, but still managed to put up a front in public. He began using Valentine as if it were his birth name; disconnecting his previous experiences from his current self. He drifted for a while before taking residence at a youth hostel; assisting with tending to the building in return for his right stay.
Eventually, Valentine became involved with a more lower-class scene via a drug addict who stayed at the hostel, thinking that he might be able to earn a bit more by peddling “this and that” where he could. After spending more time around the addicts he had met, he eventually drove a few to overdose during times when he was alone with them.
In this manner, Valentine grew to have a taste for death, and bringing death. However, influencing others did not quell his urges. He researched about murder and how to commit it flawlessly, and studied further in addition to his occult studies. He then selected his first victim: a girl who was new to the “lower class” group, and still rather estranged to its members. He stabbed and slashed her multiple times, burning her remains with his magic and obscuring all other tracks and evidence so that she would simply go missing.
Although confident thanks to his self-taught abilities, he waited several weeks before deciding to continue; no suspicion having been raised in his direction thus far. He later started to drift from city to city, and began to experiment with each new victim– trying to find which murder weapon suited his taste best. He found that he had a penchant for torture and suffering before each kill, revelling in the emotional responses and adrenaline rushes it gave him. He grew wilder with each murder, and soon almost all sanity and logical judgement he previously possessed was gone.
