D-KELA: HISTORY
D-KELA was the first presentational copy of the NJ005 model (CALM personality type), programmed for use with BUSTER type weapons and multiple firearms. She was to be put on display during a promotional information night hosted by the company. Live demonstrations would be made throughout the evening. However, during the rehearsal tests on the night before the presentation, the testers discovered that D-KELA's outer shell had not been properly coated with the resistant protection layers. The left side of D-KELA's face was disfigured via melting, and she could no longer be used as a display model. She was thrown out after her faults had been made clear, as she had lost her aesthetic value. Her limbs were dismembered from her body as per company procedure, but however, did not have her battery properly removed. She was dumped into the company mechanical waste deposit in this state, unbeknownst that her battery was still inside. Due to the NJ005's main focus being centered on battle, D-KELA's programming prompted her to continue trying to survive. Using desperate measures, she was able to (pain-stakingly) make a light connection to one of her severed arms. After establishing the initial, though delicate connection, she worked hard to connect it properly. After crawling around the junkyard and repeating the process with her other limbs, salvaging parts from the dump around her, she managed to make her escape from the facility. However, she was spotted on her way out, and local law enforcement was dispatched to reclaim her.
Although NJ005's are programmed to follow orders without fail, a master's identification must be programmed into the individual robot for the master's orders to be recognised. By default, NJ005's are programmed to recognise any employee of the manufacturing company as a master. In D-KELA's case, when she was dumped into the waste pit, a programming loophole caused her systems register the dumping as a disowning by the company. Thus, she was left without an official registered owner. In light of this coding bug, her survival programming dictated all of her actions from then onward.
After defending herself from the local authority and law enforcement, stealing a supply of batteries for herself; she fled. She hid in the wastelands surrounding the local area, travelling as far away from the city as she could. She travelled as far as her feet were able to take her each day, replacing her batteries as required. She continued travelling until the wastelands connected with fresh vegetation and flora. She adapted to the new environment quickly, and began to build shelter for herself. But she struggled to find an alternative power source for herself in such a place, devoid of civilization as it was, and eventually ground to a powerless halt.
She sat within the remains of her makeshift shelter, immobile for another forty years.
Around this time, Dunes arrived in the city D-KELA fled from, which had since expanded due to population and industry growth. It had become a dome city, with high levels of technology and a high dependence on robotics for domestic use, transport and work. He had stopped there as a pit-stop to get food; much the same way you'd stop and eat at a service station on a highway. However, he got into a fight with another customer at the store he was eating in, and eventually, things snowballed out of control. Like D-KELA, he fled far from the city after being chased by the authorities, shattering a large hole through the dome as he left.
Eventually, he came to the same area as the one D-KELA had taken shelter in. Although the area was overgrown with plantlife, he recognised there were signs of previous "human" activity in the area. He followed the traces until he found her shelter, decaying and being reclaimed by the plant life around it. Dunes found D-KELA underneath it, exactly as she had been 40 years ago, partially covered in vines. Dunes' curiosity propelled him to take a closer look and try detect what had stopped her from working. Noticing that her lack of power was her key fault, he decided to take her with him as he time-travelled to his next location.
After being fixed and re-activated, D-KELA offered to become his servant in order to repay her debt to him. Dunes agreed; figuring that no harm could become of it.
D-KELA accompanied him during the period where he fought in a galactic war as a starfighter. This was a great period in time for Dunes, and she served with him throughout all of it. D-KELA proved herself to be a useful, and "not annoying" assistant in this era and thus, Dunes decided to keep her around for a more permanent period of time.
For a many years, (although it was only a while, in Dunes' eyes) he travelled with her. She was his assistant and companion long after the starfighter period ended, and he continued his usual travels. However, Dunes came to realise that she was still a robot, and even if she was useful and capable, there was still a risk that if he chose an adventure that was too wild, she could be damaged or destroyed beyond repair. And Dunes often indulged in impossibly dangerous adventures, whenever they tickled his whimsy.
And so instead, he made it his next task to build a "home", or main home base for himself, which D-KELA would later guard and reside in. Although reluctant about no longer be working with him directly, D-KELA agreed. Dunes chose an isolated meteorite, with no natural structures. The planet had no other inhabitants, as it was unable to sustain life. Thereby, it was perfect; as no other life forms would threaten the home's privacy or D-KELA's safety. With the assistance of some labour bots that Dunes was able to collect, they carved an estate out of the rock. Although it had a simplistic outer appearance, it had many rooms and was furnished with grand items and pieces of furniture from various time periods. Some rooms were guest rooms, music rooms, study rooms, libraries, storage holds; the list went on, according to Dunes' whim. There was a room for everything, and if there wasn't, then he'd have a new one carved once he needed it.
The place was stocked with enough preserved food to last hundreds of years; with a large docking and repair bay for D-KELA, so that she could maintain herself in his absence. Dunes left eventually, once all the preparations were made. He would return on occasion, sometimes to check on D-KELA's status, sometimes to take a moment to relax, and other times to manage his inventory.
For years, D-KELA spent her days maintaining the residence and herself, keeping both in shape and ready to go at any time. But after Dunes' curse was lifted, he decommissioned the entire estate, and put D-KELA out of service as a servant. After removing all code in her system relating to official masters, he set her to roam free 100 years into the future from the time and place he had settled with his wife, Charlene.
