DUNES: HISTORY
Dunes comes from a post-apocalyptic world that is almost identical to Earth, asides from the history and cultures of its inhabitants. His timeline was a drastic spin-off from most other timelines, with the state of the world having taken a turn for the worst due to human involvement. Humans are scattered throughout this world, living in villages and colonies now that all official governments have been long since destroyed by the apocalypse. War rages here and there as some villages try to conquer others, but the most dangerous threat is the land itself, to those who do not know how to survive it.
Dunes' home village holds a small-medium sized community, which does decently on its own, despite the harsh desert environment. Dunes was raised to be a gatherer for his village from a young age, to inherit his father's role in the community. Around the time Dunes was twelve, his village was invaded, with all residents forced into slavery. Their society continued on, serving as serfs and hand servants under the invader's aristocracy. Their way of living became restricted and monitored. Dunes' father was badly injured during a failed rebel movement, which heavily limited his ability to use his left knee. Although Dunes had also had thoughts of rebellion, this was the trigger that made him begin to start considering these ideas seriously.
Dunes worked his way into a hand servant job slowly over the next two years, unable to come up with any realistic plots or solutions. As time progressed, a travelling psychic rebel was captured, and she made contact with Dunes. She revealed that the true source of power of the invaders in Dune's area was a spellmaster, who Dunes knew as the second in command of the invader forces. Together, over the next 8 months, Dunes worked towards defeating the spellmaster with the advice of the imprisoned psychic.
Although Dunes was eventually successful in defeating him, he was cursed. With his dying breath, the spellmaster passed on his curse to Dunes-- the curse that had sourced his own power. This curse stripped Dunes of his morality and ability to love others, but in return gave him natural mastery over fire magic, agelessness, and boosted endurance. The remaining rebels within the area took down what remained of the weakened invaders, sending them packing.
After finding out that Dunes had received that power and curse, the members of the community came to the conclusion that it would be best for him to leave. Dunes realized that a large part of him had been changed forever, and that there was nothing left for him in his hometown. It was at this point that Dunes decided to abandon his birth name and take on his new alias.
He traveled away, eventually to another country, and banded together with a group of (criminal) mercenaries who he met by chance. The leader of the group had come into ownership of a time-travelling device, which he used to further the exploits of the group. Through them, Dunes found items that would later become the "firsts" in his collection of supernatural possessions. Their comradery ended when Dunes stole the time-travelling device from them; which the group's leader had only recently obtained. Dunes escaped, and thus began his time-travelling adventures.
Dunes traveled like this for a few hundred years since. During this time he explored the universes, grew in fame and infamy, expanded his skills and collection, and met D-KELA. He continued traveling, with occasional periods of down-time where he will take on a normal life in a new location, sometimes studying, until he becoming bored.
After a time where he had been tailing Sabrina S.J. and Daniel Radon to obtain pieces of their power, Dunes settled down in a residential area to undertake an advanced university course. His paths crossed with delivery woman Charlene Zoe, because of the number of abnormal bulk deliveries he had to his temporary residence. The two were abrasive with each other, but Charlene pursued him out of personal amusement. Over time Dunes learned about her supernatural strength, and extended an offer to her upfront to become his new travel companion and to receive training. Charlene accepted, and was trained by him for several months before beginning to travel with him.
Eventually she learned of his curse, and decided to pursue a cure. Dunes humoured her in this, figuring that he wouldn't care either way if he were cursed or uncursed, and was doubtful that she would succeed anyway. After a few months of searching, Charlene was able to obtain a cure, but Dunes fell immediately into a spiral after regaining his full range of emotions so suddenly. Guilt, regret, and instability lead him to leave her side without warning. For a month or more, he mulled over his existential crisis in a secluded cabin, trying to figure out if his existence would ever bear any worth given the countless crimes and misdeeds he had committed in his lifetime. He figured that even if he were to kill himself, die, or spend his life repenting, nothing would ever ease the suffering he caused due to its sheer magnitude. Charlene eventually reunited with him and forced him out of his brooding. He resolved to continue travelling with her, and formulated an elaborate plan to use what resources he had to bring aid to the people and places he harmed.
During their continued travels, he revealed more about himself to her, and unwillingly began to rely on her. Charlene, having her own fatalistic attraction to him, took delight in whatever vague forms of intimacy he had to offer. Despite his own attempts to resist, Dunes developed feelings for her in return as a result of her unwavering loyalty, reliability and persistence. After dealing with his own internal conflict, Dunes came to the conclusion that the remainder of his life would feel hollowed without her. Once he had dealt with the crux of his loose ends and unfinished affairs, he returned to Charlene's hometown to settle with her permanently.
